Why choose eco-friendly packaging?

One way to minimise packaging waste going to landfill is by switching to eco-friendly packaging, like jute and hessian bags. Manufacturers and businesses may consider their responsibility to put these sorts of options into the mainstream.

Hessian and jute fabrics, whether as packaging or in other uses, are an environmentally friendly option as they are made of natural fibres and biodegrade in the environment, leaving no residue behind

What are hessian and jute?

Hessian (also known as burlap) and jute are both types of material that are manufactured from the jute plant.  As natural materials, they are renewable and biodegradable.

Hessian is known for its strength and durability, and when woven, its breathability, which makes it excellent for packaging certain types of produce, curing of concrete, and its primary use as Sandbags for construction and flood mitigation.

Jute is a thicker and more robust fabric, which has good insulation properties, and is used in furniture manufacturing and insulation as well as in the manufacture of bags for produce and dog beds.

What makes jute and hessian eco-friendly?

These materials are considered sustainable for several reasons:

  • They’re 100% biodegradable and will naturally degrade in around one to two years.
  • The jute plant they’re made from is fast-growing and harvested every six months, whereas it would take decades to produce the same volume of fibre from other trees.
  • They’re incredibly strong fabrics that last a long time without any alterations and that can maintain their shape for long periods, even with heavy loads.

Making an eco-friendly decision

By understanding the unique characteristics of these eco-friendly options, you’ll be able to make an informed decision regarding your business’ packaging needs.

Regardless of whether you opt for jute or hessian bags, take comfort in the knowledge that you’ve made an environmentally sustainable packaging choice.

At Polesy, we supply a wide range of hessian and jute bags to meet varying applications from Sandbags to potatoes and even dog beds.

Hessian Sandbags will biodegrade with no damage to the environment, and so can be left in place after use, no need to collect them to send them to landfill (but if they are sent to landfill, they will biodegrade there as well).

Hessian Cloth is used for curing of concrete, temporary barrier fencing or screening, and in other applications in the construction and landscaping industries.
